BEAUTY: What’s Your Home Scent?

 

There are very few things that are more luxurious in life than a spa.

Whenever you walk into your favourite spa, your senses are engaged immediately.  Your mood changes. You shoulders start to drop. Your eye lids start to lower and your breathing gets slower as you inhale the incredible scents around you.

The air is perfumed, soft music quietly plays, the lights are low and there is very little clutter. Candles are lit and all the furnishings are warm, soft and luxurious.  You ignore your technology and you don’t miss at all the flickering screens or beeps.

You get handed tantalising infused water or warm herbal tea. Already you feel yourself start to relax. The stresses that worried you as you walked through the door. Almost gone.

Well, why not try to recreate this at home? If you are anything like me you will have a rather healthy (or not, totally depends on how you look at it!) obsession with candles and fragrance. Creating your own can be far less expensive, easier to get to and customised to you.

CANDLES

According to the IFF (International Flavours & Fragrances, Inc. A fragranced candle can be the quickest way to transport you from your everyday stresses.  Find a fragrance that means something or that you can’t stop sniffing. I cannot get enough of Diptyque, Ecoya and SOH (Scent Of Home) candles.

AROMATHERAPY

Organic essential oils can also be used to enhance the dullest of days either through oil burners, into your favourite creams. To your bath or even into the corner of your shower where the hot water will diffuse the scent through the room. You can add a few drops of calming lavender to your pillow if you want a deeper sleep.

AMBIENCE

I have done this for years. After exercise or a day where I have had to just wash away the stress. I light the candles that I always keep in the bathroom (along with flowers!). I turn off the lights and then relax. The removal of artificial light. The fragrance and warm water will do wonders even after the worst of days.

MUSIC

Spotify is great for finding relaxing music that is for a specific purpose. Play this as background music, soft, soothing and relaxing. For the mornings you can counter this with energetic, uplifting music that makes you want to dance out of the house.  Music is incredibly powerful as a mood changer – for me, Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off can get me dancing around the house and smiling, ready for whatever the day may bring!
